Today saw the launch of a new website for Technicad Recruitment Ltd.

Technicad, based in Wokingham, is one the market leaders in providing temporary and permanent multi discipline design engineers and CAD designers for the oil, gas and petrochemical industries.

With regard to the latter, due to the sheer numbers involved, the system allows the company to upload details in csv format which has saved considerable time in terms of data entry. When a new vacancy is posted, the company is able to assign it to a consultant and email it out to any number of groups of candidates.

On the front end of the site, when users browse jobs, they can add to a job basket and submit multiple applications at once. For those users who want to submit their CV without going through the job check out process, there is the facility do this.

RSS feeds have been imported into the site to enable users to stay up to date with recent industry developments.

As with all sites developed by Web Preference, the site is very search engine friendly - a fact which is accentuated by the ability to update a Google XML site map at any time from the admin area.

Paul Middleweek (Director) and Michael Webb (Senior Consultant) made the following comments regarding the service received from Web Preference:

At Technicad, our website was in need of updating and modernising, in order to best accommodate our clients and contractors. With the help of Paul at Web Preference, we have managed to not only give our company a new brand, but also a website with a modern feel. Paul\'s knowledge and web design ability have not only helped us in letting all of our contractors get the latest information on current vacancies, but also allows us to maintain our database of contractors with much more ease than before. On behalf of Technicad, I would like to thank Paul for all of his hard work over the last few months, and for providing us with a website and brand that we can be proud of for many years to come.

Hosting partner combats the Gumblar virus

Over the last year there has been a substantial increase in the number of sites on the internet that have been hacked due to viruses that steal FTP credentials from user's home computers. The hackers then use these credentials to insert hidden code within your website.

Please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gumblar for more information on this type of attack.

To reduce the significant threat from these viruses our hosting partner has developed a solution which will make such attacks extremely difficult. The solution is to lock FTP when it's not in use.

Our customers will be able to unlock FTP accounts by either selecting a period of time after which the lock will remain in force, or by nominating an IP address that has permanent FTP access.

These security measures will ensure that the majority of sites have FTP locked, greatly reducing the risk of having our clients' websites infected.

Intranet Site for Shere

Having previously launched the public website for Shere in September 2009, Web Preference was commissioned to build an intranet site for the company later that year. The intranet site is a key tool in educating and maintaining communications between the management and employees in the business.

Built on our bespoke content management system to enable it to be easily updated, the site provides additional functionality in the form of: Events, News, Presentations/Downloads and an image library. The latter is particularly important since Shere maintain a huge image library of their machines and installations, and it is important for employees to have access to this collateral, often for marketing purposes. Thumbnail images can be found via a search facility, and hovering over a thumbnail produces a larger version on the screen; clicking on the thumnail image, the user can then download a very high resolution image to the desktop.

In the admin, we have also restricted access to various parts of the site which can be allocated to uses by the master adminstrator.

Upgraded website for the National Demolition Training Group

Today saw the launch of an upgraded website for the National Demolition Training Group. Based in new offices at Hemel Hempstead, the NDTG organises training courses for the industry across the UK.

The site, which can be found at www.ndtg.org, provides a content management system in order that the staff at the organisation can update the site themselves. In addition, there a variety of bespoke modules which are designed to simplify the process of distributing information to the NDTG members. These include modules for courses, the industry card schemes, news, events and membership. The site also offers an email marketing tool, common features to all Web Preference sites: search engine friendly urls and valid mark up and use of CSS throughout for layout and styling.

Sophie Francis, NDTG Training Group Manager, made the following comments:

The NDTG recruited Web Preference and Paul Sawyer to develop the National Demolition Training Group website. We are a training organisation and offer a variety of courses and assessment to the demolition industry.

Our spec was to offer an easy to use website for individuals with a variety of educational backgrounds, some of whom have no computer experience.

Paul Sawyer visited our offices in 2009, to discuss what the NDTG required the website to offer. He was attentive, listened to our needs and was forthcoming with ideas. All qualities you need in a website designer. Both myself and Paul went away feeling confident about our first meeting and I was sure he would deliver, and that he did.

Throughout the following couple of months, Paul and I made regular contact via phone and email. He made the process extremely easy for me and minimised the input I had to give due to my busy work load. He responded very quickly to my emails, and always returned my calls. He understood exactly what I was wanting from the website and ensured that he questioned any discrepancies he had through our communication. He found ways around issues we had with regards to particular company processes and ensure he delivered the highest quality of website.

Once the design stage of the website was complete, Paul contacted me to arrange a conference call to go through the administration of the site. He was extremely patient throughout this end user process and considerate to my concerns. Any concerns were immediately rectified by Paul in a professional manner. Since the implementation of the website, Paul has been at the other end of the phone in all instances and has guided me through any processes needed.

So far the feedback on the website has been positive from our clients, and we hope that the number of people visiting our website increases. It is hoped that the website will minimise the administration work by head office as much information is now readily available on line.

To conclude, I would like to say a big ‘Thank you’ to Paul Sawyer. His skills as a web designer has enhanced the way our company operates and I am confident he will continue to support me with any assistance I require to maintain our new website.

Global insurance and reinsurance consultant Cranmore, recently commissioned Web Preference Ltd to build 5 websites for their offices in the UK, USA, Australia, Thailand and Bermuda.

The sites went live today, the urls for which can be found at www.cranadj.co.uk, www.cranadj.com, www.cranadj.com.au, www.cranmore-asia.com and www.cranadj.bm.

The sites are driven by a single database and content management system residing on cranadj.co.uk and incoroporate a management and offices modules in order that the personnel throughout the group and the office locations can be managed via a single interface. In addition, Web Preference created an image carousel for hte home page. As is our practice, the dynamic urls are search engine friendly, the mark up is in in XHTML 1.0 Strict and the sites utilised valid CSS throughout for layout and styling

Mark Wood, director of Cranmore, made the following comments regarding the service the company received from Web Preference:

Cranmore has just celebrated 10 years as the largest specialist organisation in the world offering audit and consultancy services to the insurance and reinsurance market. In that time we have developed from a London-based company into a world-wide group, opening offices in Tampa, Rhode Island, Bermuda, Sydney and Bangkok. To coincide with that anniversary, we decided that a fresh approach was required to our website in order to illustrate that growth and emphasise to our existing and potential clients how it can benefit them.

Paul Sawyer at Web Preference was recommended to us by our colleague in Asia and has proven to be an excellent partner in developing our new group websites. He immediately understood our requirements, offering expert advice on approach and layout but also taking into consideration our wishes to include certain of our own design and text elements. Paul has also always been available to respond promptly and efficiently to our queries.

Anyone visiting our UK site (www.cranadj.co.uk) or any of the sites for the Cranmore group companies will see a professional and modern web presence and it is one that is easy to maintain on an on-going basis. We would have no hesitation in recommending that anyone looking to improve their website should use Paul/Web Preference.

As with all sites built by Web Preference, dynamic urls are made search engine friendly, while the mark up is clean. We are also backing up the database daily though the code which provides valuable assurances to the company. As with the vast majority of our clients, we are hosting the website.

Anthony Parson, Marketing Manager at Shere made the following comments:

Working with Paul Sawyer on the modernisation of our website has been a breathe of fresh air. Paul certainly knows his subject and is quick to grasp the needs of his client, talking through the various options with clarity and patience.

We are now able to manage and update our site ourselves with confidence - but know that Paul is just a phone call away if we come unstuck! Many thanks Paul.

New Garland Property Planning Group Website Launched

Today saw the launch of a new and upgraded website for specialist property planning company, Garland Property Planning Group.

The website, which can be found at www.garlandgroup.co.uk, is commensurate with the very impressive new premises in the heart of Cobham, Surrey and dovetails with the company's recent marketing collateral.

Offering a range of new features, the website is fully content managed - enabling easy updating by the company's administrators - and provides for custom built modules for the purpose of displaying case study information, news stories, management individuals, frequently asked questions and the display of outgoing links from the site. A dynamic RSS feed from the news section will allow users to keep updated on the site's developments.

In addition, an email marketing tool will allow the business to communicate with past and prospective clients in a more traditional manner. Site wide search is standard on all Web Preference sites where it is justified. As is the norm, the mark up is in XHTML 1.0 Strict and makes use of valid CSS throughout for layout and stying. Search engine friendly urls complete the picture.

Ellen Cullen, Office and Project Manager at Property Planning Group, made the following comments:

We needed to update and improve our website so it looked good and gave a comprehensive review of our services - Web Preference have made it really easy and in no time at all have created a stylish new site that dovetails with our recent marketing collateral!

Paul has come up with great ideas, such as linking an email marketing tool to the website so we can keep in touch with our clients and potential clients in an easy and cost effective manner. What’s even better is that I can update the website myself and check how many visitors we’ve had!

Paul has been a pleasure to work with staying in touch regularly and always answering queries quickly. I would definitely recommend Web Preference for designing websites!

Dynamic Image Text Replacement

Tired of using standard fonts for your headings?

We have utilised several dynamic image text replacement techniques for several projects recently - namely Principle360 and Julie Lawford. In both cases, the font we used is Myriad Pro Bold.

The techniques from an article first posted on A List Apart; http://www.alistapart.com/articles/dynatext (we used this for the Julie Lawford site). This method does rely upon JavaScript, whereas another method which can be found at http://www.artypapers.com/csshelppile/pcdtr does not, and uses output buffering to produce a very quick response time. However, despite the limitations of the Rosenberger method, we have found it more reliable, particularly for dynamic pages, and this is our preferred choice going forward.

The website, which can be found at www.cgrgroup.com, features a dynamic Flash map for the identification of the group's projects. On the home page, users can click on a region, which will then show all of the current projects in that location. Clicking on an icon will take the user directly to the project page. The projects themselves are managed by a custom built module for this purposes, with categorisation based upon continents and countries. The projects module is an add on to our bespoke content managment system, facilitating the easy adminstration of the site. In addition to the projects module, the site offers a simple methodology for adding company vacancies. As with all projects undertaken by Web Preference, the site also offers search engine friendly urls, while the mark up is in XHTML 1.0 strict and uses valid css throughout for layout and styling.

Dr. Susan Grummitt, Director of Cullen Grummitt & Roe, made the following comments:

I would like to thank Paul Sawyer for all his assistance and patience in the design and building of the new Cullen Grummitt & Roe website. The website required modernisation and it has surpassed our expectations, having already received very positive feedback. Paul was always available to answer any queries we had to facilitate the development of the website in a clear and helpful manner. I am particularly impressed with the program used to update the website, which is extremely easy to use. Thank you for all your hard work.

Julie made the following comments relating to the service she received from Web Preference:

Having collaborated with Paul Sawyer on a number of client projects over recent years, I had no hesitation in asking the Web Preference team to design and build my new web site at www.julielawford.co.uk. Things went exceptionally well, right from the outset. Having discussed my objectives for the site and some design ideas, Paul produced a layout which delivered the fresh, new look and strong branding that I was seeking. Paul was especially diligent in communicating progress updates and discussing options, right through the development process – this was supremely helpful. He came up with great ideas which improved the way the site works and enhanced its visual impact. I am absolutely delighted with the end result and in particular with the ease of use of the content management and email marketing features. Thanks to Paul and his team, not only was the web site redesign and launch process a pain-free and efficient one, it was a positive pleasure.

I am particularly impressed with the updated editor which allows us to easily update the site without the need to use complicated programmes or risk messing up the code - this has already proved invaluable as our staff are able to do product updates themselves - an essential feature in a product oriented site which is constantly changing.

I am sure the site will be a useful resource for our customers and prospects and I have no doubt this will put out company on the radar of future buyers and be of great benefit to our existing customers and indeed our internal staff.

New website to help demolition workers return to employment

Today saw the launch of an innovative website for helping unemployed workers in the demolition industry return to work.

Demolition Jobs, which has attracted support from the National Federation of Demolition Contractors (NFDC) allows demolition employers to search for available workers, who maintain their own records, through an easy to use interface once they are logged in.

The full feature lists is as follows:

Content Management System

Registration and login system for workers

Worker search for employers

Search data saved in cookie in order that employers don't have to log into the site

Tracking of contacts made

Course module for workers once they have logged into the system

Workers maintain their own data

Downloads

Contact form with recaptcha form to help combat spam

Search engine friendly urls

Mark up in XHTML 1.0 Strict and use of valid CSS throughout for layout and styling

In addition, Web Preference is providing hosting and support for the business.

Mark Anthony, owner of Mark Anthony Publicity who created the concept and the content for the site - made the following comments:

Paul Sawyer at Web Preference Ltd has already built and managed a number of commercial websites for me in the past but, when I went to him with my idea for www.demolition-jobs.co.uk, I knew that it was going to be a markedly different challenge.

The basic concept behind www.demolition-jobs.co.uk was to provide the newly redundant and the long-term unemployed of the demolition sector with an online shop window through which to advertise their availability to work. But while I had attracted some initial backing from the National Federation of Demolition Contractors to get this off the ground, this was a strictly altruistic, not-for-profit initiative. While I wasn’t expecting Web Preference to work for nothing, I was seeking some cost-effective solutions to some very tricky design problems.

One of the key challenges of the website was that many people within the demolition industry are not overly web savvy. The site, therefore, needed to be slick and professional but, above all, simple-to-use and easy to navigate.

Web Preference’s solution ticked all those boxes and a good many more. A simple email verification tool – the brainchild of Paul Sawyer – will help minimise spam while the use of drop-down menus makes the initial sign-up extremely easy and fast. And this is mirrored with the ease with which would-be employers can find prospective candidates for job vacancies.

I officially launched the website to more than 200 demolition professionals on Friday 6 March 2009 and was absolutely delighted by the response. Furthermore, despite an exceptionally high level of initial traffic, the site has proved to be extremely robust.

I would like to think that the site will help a lot of people back into employment within the demolition industry but, even if it helps just one person, it would have served its purpose. And we couldn’t have done that without the input of Paul Sawyer and Web Preference Ltd.

New website for National Federation of Demolition Contractors

Today saw the launch of the new website for the National Federation of Demolition Contractors (NFDC). The new website, which can be found at www.demolition-nfdc.com was commissioned because the Federation wanted a better mechanism for keeping in touch with its members, and to display information in more a engaging way, particularly with regard to the video and audio.

To this end, the site offers:

Content Management System

Main NFDC site and sites for 5 regions of NFDC facilitated by directory structure on site

Member Login

Dynamic module for display of officers

News module

Events module

Downloads module

Gallery module

Contact form using server side validation and the a recaptcha form to help combat spam

Email marketing tool

Ability to send mass emails to members on individual news stories

Cron jobs to send out weekly emails to members and subscribers

Member search

Site wide search

Non members sign up for news updates and ability to change preferences once logged in

Ajax driven quick poll

Mark up XHTML 1.0 Strict and use of valid CSS throughout for layout and styling

Search engine friendly urls

Mark Anthony, Press Officer for the Federation, made these comments:

I have spent the past two and a half years working with an inherited website that was no longer fit for purpose. It had no audio or video support; it had a highly-restrictive upload limit; and it lacked the ability to drive email communications to our members. We are a trade federation operating in a fast-moving industry where legislation and regulations are constantly changing, so the website is an absolutely vital vehicle through which to keep members abreast of such changes.

Paul Sawyer at Web Preference not only took a detailed brief but also advised us through the development of the new site, ensuring that the new-look site is fully optimised to provide members of the Federation with an easy-to-navigate, highly-interactive website that delivers news in a fast, punchy way.

Moreover, Paul understood that no one within the Federation is particularly web-savvy. He has, therefore, delivered a website that is as easy to manage as it is to use. The content management system is so simple that just about anyone with the ability to type could use it. This will, I am sure, ensure that we are constantly adding new content to the benefit of the demolition industry in general and the NFDC membership in particular.

Finally, and equally importantly, Paul demonstrated a clear understanding not just of his client’s needs but also those of the site’s visitors. Demolition contractors want information that they can access easily and digest quickly and the format that Paul created with the new NFDC website has met those needs perfectly.

The full feature list is as follows:

We were not disappointed; the new site was on the first page of Google, within days, and support was only a call away. An updated site has been launched, and Paul offered even more user friendly interfaces, reduced costs and is always there to support and enhance the site. His support and guidance to novices like me is second to none.

The contact form incorporates server side validation and uses the recaptcha form to help combat spam. Integration with the email marketing tool implemented for the Saxon Brands website, is included.

As with all websites built by Web Preference, the urls are search engine friendly, while the mark up is in XHTML 1.0 Strict and all layout and styling is controlled through the use of external style sheets.

Janet Stimson, who worked with Web Preference throughout the project, made the following comments:

Our Saxon Products website was one that needed to integrate with our main Saxon Brands site and one that could be continually updated easily and without fuss. Web Preference has achieved that superbly. Paul has been a pleasure to work with and has shown great patience and professionalism throughout the project and always available to answer any queries.

We would not hesitate to recommend Web Preference to anyone looking for a professional website and to boost their web presence.

Saxon look forward to continuing our business relationship. Thanks again Paul.

Website launch for St Kitts Properties

Property development and management company, St Kitts Properties launched its new website today. Working with the well established and respected local developer Faron Lawrence, the company aims to promote the St Kitts lifestyle to UK property investors.

The site, which can be viewed at www.stkitts-properties.co.uk provides for full content management, an email marketing tool, news database, flash photo gallery for the Life in St Kitts section, and a Lightbox gallery for the display of completed properties at the Ocean Lawns development. We have used the jQuery framework for this site; its enhancements can be seen in the frequently asked questions section of the site. As always, the site is marked up in XHTML 1.0 Strict and uses CSS throughout for layout and styling.

Rudee Bertie, director of the company, made the following comments:

It started with an idea, then a dream but now a reality.

I'm a regular visitor to St.Kitts & Nevis and always wanted to be a part of it in more ways than one.

The opportunity was presented to me and I grabbed it with both hands.

Now I had to bring the project to life and this is where Web Preference took over.

With all my thoughts and ideas now and truly alive for all to see, Paul Sawyer pulled it all together and offered support and guidance along the way.

He works to deadlines and is available 24 hours a day. The advice he gives is second to none and I feel confident having Web Preference maintaining and supporting our website to allow us to concentrate and look after business.

World renowned Richmond based architect, Julian Bicknell launched the redevelopment of its website today.

Julian Bicknell has completed over 200 projects, dating back to the early 1970s and wanted to display the portfolio in an effective manner. As a result, the home page serves 15 highlighted projects; which when clicked on, open up the detailed section. The company have uploaded a further 13 thumbnails, which display the full sized image using a Lightbox effect. The full listing of projects is shown on the Projects page; where a project is not highlighted, the thumbnail image is also reproduced as a lightbox effect when clicked upon. The design of the administrative interface is such that the company can easily change the highlighted projects, and also select the number of thumbnails to display for each project.

Kevin Leadingham, Associate at the company, made the following comments:

We have been delighted with Paul Sawyer of Web Preference. He has been able to provide a full update to our website with all the special characteristics we had been looking for.

Our initial meetings were both professional and informative. With Paul's help we were able to develop a design that matched our house style and presented our material in an immediately engaging manner combined with the ability to update the content ourselves in the future.

Paul's response throughout was personal and immediate. He was able to solve any difficulties we encountered along the way.

We would thoroughly recommend Web Preference for an efficient, professional and forward thinking service.

New website for media relations company Mark Anthony Publicity

The new website for Mark Anthony Publicity was launched today. Mark Anthony Publicity, based in Epsom, is a full-service media relations agency specialising in the construction, demolition, recycling, waste and extractive industries.

The website provides the company with a content management system, dynamic menu structure, a drop down menu created entirely in CSS, and custom modules for displaying work examples and upcoming events. In addition, the admin interface allows contributors to only access the events/schedule section, and only to add and edit contributions they make. Once such an entry has been added, Mark Anthony will receive an email of this fact, which after approval he will then publish to the site.

Mark Anthony, Director of the Company, made the following comments:

I have previously worked with Paul Sawyer and Web Preference on a number of client websites so I knew roughly what to expect when I asked them to design and build a custom site for my own media relations and publicity business.

However, what I didn't expect was the speed of response and turnaround which took, from my initial brief to a live launch, just three weeks.

In that time, I was kept fully abreast of developments with my site. Paul Sawyer made a number of important recommendations that greatly enhanced the functionality of the finished site. And, perhaps most importantly of all, Paul told me when he thought I was wrong.

As a result, I now have a website that is slick, professional and simple; one that immediately drew admiring emails from my customers, contacts, friends and family.

Thanks Paul for all your hard work and for delivering such a great website in such a short space of time.

Integration with HSBC Secure ePayments for Customs Clearance Ltd

Our client, Customs Clearance Ltd, wanted to enable their customers to pay multiple invoices online. We have enabled this feature by creating a secure payment page. Here, customers can easily add multiple invoices, and proceed to step 2, which takes their payment details. The integration with HSBC Secure ePayments utilises the API whereby all credit card authentication is undertaken on site. When the transaction is completed, Customs Clearance and the client receive confirmation emails from the site.

Originally launched in October 2006, we have completely rewritten the website for Hertford based architects AD Architects. This was undertaken to provide a completely bespoke administrative interface in order to enable easier updating of the site - particularly relating to projects, and to bring the site into line with our standard practice of providing clients with valid XHTML and using CSS throughout for layout and styling. The site also incorporates a news database, which AD Architects plan to keep updated on a regular basis.

Alan Whittingham, Director of AD Architects has made these comments regarding the service received from Web Preference:

We are delighted with our new website and appreciate the effort you have put in to tailor it to our requirements.

The site also incorporates a top end email marketing capability which facilitates monitoring of open rates and click throughs and will allow the company to schedule emails, which can be constructed from an unlimited number of templates. In addition, there are database driven modules for the display of brand products and case studies. This will make it very easy for the company to keep the site updated going forward.

Romeo De Lima Pereira, Business Development Manager at Saxon Brands, made the following comments:

Thanks Web Preference for all the hard work in setting up our new website. Paul Sawyer has always been present and very quick in his responses. Plus, he was always keen in adjusting every single detail to make sure than the whole site was in tune with our new corporate identity.

He helped us as well to set-up our e-marketing facility and taught us how to use it efficiently. We are now running successful e-marketing campaigns.

We are particularly impressed with how Web Preference was flexible during the development of our website and allow us to do amendments until the final hours before the launch. We are as well impressed by Paul’s perspicacity in resolving problems when these ones occur.

We would not hesitate in recommending Web Preference services and we look forward to working with them in the future.

As someone that has never been involved in the design of a website before, I realise that our brief may not have been as complete or helpful as perhaps it might have been.
I was using another supplier to design and maintain my website.

It all started off okay, the rep came out to see me and promised me the earth, told me that him and his team were brilliant and very competitive on price, basically he said all the right words to get me listening, so what did I do, I accepted his proposal and he begun to show me what he could do.

Like i said, begun! and that was January 2005, yes you heard me 2005 and I am still waiting for the completion.

However, I don't quite remember how Web Preference was introduced to my company but I would put hand on heart and say that it was an introduction that has taken me and my business places that I could never imagine.

Paul came to see me, he promised reality, functionality, reliability and delivered accurately, efficiently, effectively and professionally.

Always giving advice and pointing us in the right direction, Web Preference now maintains our site with constant reliable updates.

It has been a while since our last newsletter - we have been busy on projects, and developing our own new site!

Since then, we have launched six sites - which we briefly describe below - and have also set up a relationship with a finance company to enable smaller customers to finance their projects over a longer timescale. Details of this venture can be found on the website.

Here are the details of the sites we have produced:

LCV Leasing went live on April 5th. The site offers a database driven catalogue for the display of the light commercial vehicles provided by the company, in addition to a site wide search. Ease of navigation together with a cross categorisation of product lines is aimed at raising the number of enquiries received, substantially. We have also taken care to minimise spam through the contact form, by providing a random image verification function. Built using valid XHTML 1.0 Strict using valid CSS throughout for layout and styling, the site is search engine friendly and accessible.
